What Dua that a Muslim says when he gets Sick?

Seeking spiritual healing through the Quran and Sunnah is a core practice for every Muslim. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us specific Duas and practices to perform when we or our loved ones feel unwell. While Islam encourages seeking professional medical help, combining it with sincere Ruqyah (spiritual healing) brings peace and divine support to the recovery process.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us what to say on sick days, and that provides spiritual relief and cure. A Muslim is encouraged to seek medicine for his condition; otherwise, he may be considered neglectful in the view of many scholars.

Hazrat A’isha (رضي الله عنها) reported that when any person amongst us fell ill, Nabi (ﷺ) used to rub him with His Right Hand and then recite:

‏”‏ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادرُ سَقَمًا ‏”‏

“Allahumma rabba al-nnas adhhibi al-ba’sa ishfi anta al-sshafi la shifa’a illa shifa’uka shifa’an la yughadiru saqaman.”

Translation: O Lord of the people, grant him health, heal him, for You are the Great Healer. There is no healer but You; with Your healing power, one is healed and illness is removed.

She further added: When Nabi (ﷺ) fell ill and His illness took a serious turn, she took hold of His hand to rub His body with His own Sacred Hand, seeking its blessings. But He (ﷺ) withdrew His hand and continued to recite.

Nabi (ﷺ) also said: “He who eats 7 Ajwa dates in the morning, neither poison nor black magic will harm him on that day.”

Surah Al-Fatiha: The Best Ruqyah

Narrated by Abu Saeed (رضي الله عنه), a group of Sahaba performed Ruqyah for a tribal leader who was stung by a poisonous insect. They recited Surah Al-Fatiha, and he recovered immediately as if he were released from a chain. When they informed the Prophet (ﷺ), he smiled and said: “How did you know that it is a Ruqyah?”

Duas for Physical Pain

Uthman Ibn Abil-As (رضي الله عنه) complained of pain in his body. The Prophet (ﷺ) told him: “Put your hand on the place where you feel pain and say ‘Bismillah’ three times, then say seven times:

أعوذُ بِعِزَّةِ الله وقُدرَتهِ منْ شَرِّ مِا أجدُ وأُحاَذِر

Translation: I seek refuge in the glory and power of Allah from the evil of what I feel and worry about.

Protection for Children

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) said the Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn by saying: “Your forefather (Ibrahim) used to seek refuge for Ismail and Ishaq with these words:

“أعوذُ بكلماتِ اللهِ التامَّةِ، مِن كُلِّ شيطانٍ وهامَّةٍ، ومِن كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لامَّةٍ”

Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.

The Power of Surah Al-Falaq & An-Naas

After the revelation of Al-Mu’awwidhatain (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas), the Prophet (ﷺ) relied on them primarily for protection against the Jinn and the evil eye. He used to recite them and wipe over his body before sleeping for total protection.

Conclusion

Maintaining a strong connection with Allah through these authentic Duas provides a spiritual shield. Whether you are facing a minor illness or a difficult health challenge, reciting these words with conviction (Yaqeen) is a Sunnah that brings both rewards and healing. May Allah grant Shifa to all those who are suffering.
